History & General Information

❝ When I was a girl, I dreamt of standing in a room looking at a girl who was and was not myself, who stood looking at another girl, who also was and was not myself. My mother took this for a nightmare. I saw it as the beginning of a career in physics. ❞

Among the several of universes that this particular woman could be found within (no matter her stature, gender, or anything that happens to be altered in comprehensible conditions), this happens to be one of the more prominent. This distinction solely relies on the matter of this Lutece’s experiences though: the experimentation on the atom that allowed her to break the walls that separated universes. Ever since communication was allowed through, albeit it was Morse code, Rosalind had focused entirely upon the transition of universes and their effect on living organisms.

There were no books upon this particular subject— therefore she had to find out herself and believe me when I was say she was ecstatic to. *This interest had come about by the time this lady had graduated highschool in Birmingham, UK and relocated to Cambridge, where she attended the University of Cambridge in order to obtain a B.S. (Bachelor of Science). Rosalind had been at the top of her classes, as expected, and had always been found tampering with experiments until inevitably, she had caught the eye of a man looking to invest (Comstock). Comstock’s wages and assurance of opportunity had persuaded the young, determined lady into working, where she would be taking the role of his leading physicist…* From there, she had founded the Lutece Field, which came to be the most important aspect of this insubstantial city that Comstock had been putting all his funds in. The project, though a bit daft, sparked inspiration and the team of Lutece, Comstock, and company created Columbia. Even if she had played her part, her role was still not over. Comstock had requested even more projects. From the Lutece Field came the concept of the Lutece Tear.

It was through the Lutece Field that the woman had unintentionally came to communicate with another person from a neighboring world. Upon further conversation, Rosalind had come to learn that the very embodiment sending messages through the wall had been none other than another Lutece. *This had brought about the question of why— why was it that pair hadn’t come into contact with other Lutece’s? Both Rosalind and Robert had come to the conclusion that it was all a matter of decision and how those would simultaneously write out the outcomes of ones life. Of all Lutece’s, they had been the most alike—- choosing the precise same atom as the other. Certainly there must be those who chose differing atoms and paired up just as the two of them did? A question for another time.

Being able to speak with herself inspired the woman further and led to the conclusion of this: if the two had been tinkering with the exact atom that enabled communication… Of all the Lutece’s that were possible, the two of them were practically the same person— except not. The other Lutece’s, be them man, woman, or what have you, must have taken alternative paths, resulting in their lack of words. Robert, as he called himself, understands just as she does, and feels the exact way as she (at least, that had been what she gathered).

It was this breakthrough that led Comstock, a man she hardly cared for but in turn worked for, to take control of the machine soon produced by both Rosalind and Robert that created ‘windows’ in separate universes… Comstock had believed that the contraption allowed him to see prophecies, though they were far from it: mere possibilities. Ordinarily this difference would have been gotten across to him but the man was willing to offer the one thing that kept her from being with her brother, money. It was needed to further her intention of bringing the scientist in the opposing universe back into her own.

The procedure had been a success, though it held many contradicting factors. Though Robert, whom she now called brother, was proving their knowledge through practical living in a separate universe, stress took him entirely and rendered him weak. Rosalind nurtured him to health and it wasn’t long before Comstock had a risky task: the retrieval of a child that was and was not his own. The ‘twins’ had found a separate universe that provides the child he lacks. The pious man had not always been so pious. Had Comstock never of gotten the baptism that shaped him, the path he went down included a child ‘Anna Dewitt’.

The girl had been taken and was now being housed in Columbia. Through her abduction something occurred that left the ‘incident’ puzzling. Elizabeth (she is now called this instead of Anna) had unintentionally left a piece of her in the alternate universe from which she’d been taken which left her with the ability to create ‘tears’. As a result, tears were seen appearing all around the city… This lead to the Lutece twin’s downfall and to some degree, ‘recreation’. Robert had felt regretful after seeing the future in which they helped to create, causing him to persuade Rosalind that they.. Attempt to undo what has been done. She hadn’t been hopeful, but in order to keep her brother happy, she played her part. Jeremiah Fink, a ghastly man, was contacted by Comstock after having heard their plan and gave the order to rid Columbia of the twins. Fink obstructed a voyage through their machine, causing their supposed death.

Rosalind and Robert Lutece were declared dead on October 31st, 1909.

❝ Comstock has sabotaged our contraption. Yet, we are not dead. A theory: we are scattered amongst the possibility space. But my brother and I are together, and so, I am content. He is not. The business with the girl lies unresolved. But perhaps there is one who can finish it in our stead. ❞
